This day and age, most people want to “Go Green” but many people aren’t sure how and where to start. Many people think they will have to spend tons of money to replace all of their old products in their house. Another fear is that environmentally friendly products won’t clean as well as their tried and true harsh chemical infested products. Fortunately, none of the above is true. You can easily turn your house into a safer, cleaner and environmentally conscience place.
The first place to start when you’re turning your house into an environmentally friendly area is to CLEAN OUT your house. Get rid of all the old products you have been using. Yes, that means the bleach, the scrubs, the sprays. Anything you use that either makes you cough, sneeze, hold your breath or squint your eyes when you use…throw them away! Common sense should tell you these products are not safe! To drive this point home, think about that harsh chemical you’re using to clean the floor….do you have pets or small children? Think about them walking/ crawling over the floor and putting their hands or feet in their mouths…gross right?
Next, replace all the old items with comparable products that are safe and healthy. For example, vinegar can replace a household favorite- Windex. Baking Soda will work as well as many powder cleaners such as Comet or Clorox. There are many simple, safe household products that will clean as well if not better than most store bought products. Bonus factor…THEY’RE CHEAP and often time’s people already have these items in their homes.
Now, you need to eliminate using disposable cleaning agents. Anything you use once and throw away is not eco-friendly! The point is to reduce waste. So, invest in sponges, save old socks or t-shirts, and use this instead of paper towels or one time dusting rags. Mops you wash and dry are much “greener” than the wet wipe mops you use once and throw away. You could even go as far as trading in traditional diapers for cloth reusable diapers….yes, I know that may be pushing it!
At least with the changes above, you are on track to being an environmentally friendly cleaner. Your house, your body, and the environment will thank you!
